No gas day

No this isn't being mindful of flatulence. There's a posting running around the Internet to not buy gas on April 15. That might be a good idea at face value, but skipping buying gas on that day won't keep your car running if the gauge gets down to zero. I guess if you need gas for your car you should be appreciative because you probably have a job or income. If you need the gas to go and find a job, fill up on April 15. Nobody will hold it against you and good luck in the job market.

Election Nov. 2

The first Tuesday in November should be an interesting day. The Republicans are trying to wrest control of Congress from the Democrats, and they're trying to hang on to their majority. "They" say that one of the most interesting races is the local one here between Scott Rigell and Glen Nye. Earlier this month, I wrote a letter to the editor rapping Rigell for his current and former campaign ads. The one that I thought was the silliest was an ad he ran many months ago. He said that he was going to go to Congress and fire Nancy Pelosi. The closing jab in my letter was that if he did get elected (I said if Hades froze over but they edited that part) that he would be a freshman Representative and wouldn't have the power to fire the men's room attendant. That's pretty acerbic but I thought he was pretty arrogant for his statements. I noticed that nobody commented on my letter. In truth, I didn't think they would publish it. I do get published about twice a year, and that's probably about the most they would do so that one person doesn't hog the op-ed page. I really enjoy writing letters to the editor. I relish the opportunity to see my name in print and most of the letters I write are about matters close to my heart, such as one about the Governor's desire to close Southeastern Virginia Training Center, which houses adults who are developmentally delayed. The governor nixed his idea later, but I'm not that arrogant to think he did so after reading my letter. Anyway, getting back to the campaign, I also found it interesting that Rigell ran a commercial talking about his humble roots when he came to Virginia, his dealership, and his first business which was a janitorial one. Maybe I was clairvoyant; the ad didn't run until after my letter. Maybe Rigell would want to fire the men's room attendant so that he could apply for his job? Who knows. I say aye for Nye. One more comment: seems like a lot of people want to get rid of the Democrats because of the current economic situation, and have the Republicans fix this mess. However, wasn't it the Republicans and that retired guy from Texas that got us into this situation? Obama is right; it takes time to turn all this around. I don't want a bunch of elephant worshipers trying to fix all the ills that ail us. Let's see what happens in three days. Stay tuned....

Mouse in the house, part two

I found more mice in my house. It was either one or a few more, I don't know. It (or they) ran from closet to closet and I could hear a lot of scratching at night. The problem is field mice, little brown ones that are fast as "hello". I saw the mice in the kitchen, in my bedroom, and one escaped from the closet it was in and ran under a couch. I finally called an exterminator. The tech who came out first got me to sign a long term contract for a year; he gave me a hundred dollars off the initial visit with the proviso that they would come out every every month and keep the bugs away. The latter is a minor problem. The tech that set the traps came out about five days later and said he saw droppings in the attic; the first guy also saw them under the house. The second guy then explained (wonder why the first guy didn't say that) that the mice were probably hibernating under my house. When the weather got warm, they all took off except for the ones that were left behind. Those were the ones that were running around my house looking for an exit. If I had known that, I could have left the front door open for awhile and maybe the stragglers would have hit the road and saved me $150 plus the every other month thing. At least I know in the future what to expect. The mice also don't fall prey easily to mousetraps. One ran right by two as he was darting from closet to closet. At least the house sounds a lot quieter for the past night. Maybe the one (or ones) that were left behind finally figured out how to get the hello out of Dodge and join their family members outside. Good riddance.

Death of a mouse?

I have a mouse in my house, I think it's a louse, but whatever it is it's a lousy intruder. It's small and brown and I've seen it running around. I spied it three times, the last one running into a closet in the living room last night. I put out a mouse trap but it didn't take the bait. Then, I came up with an idea. I got two boards and a picture I wasn't using and blocked the outside of the closet. About half an hour later, I heard this scratching sound. Whatever it is was stuck inside the closet. I went online and found out that a mouse in a calm environment can live about 12 days; it it's under stress than it will last 2-3 days. Good! Maybe I'll smell the fumes from a rat (or a mouse, a good deceased one) by Tuesday or Wednesday, then it will be gone forever, that is after I unceremoniously sweep it into a dust pan and toss it's habeus corpse out the door.

March Madness

Once again, that annual tribute to round ball junkies has commenced again. I am part of that group, at least for the next few weeks. It’s fascinating to see how all these eager athletes love being shoved into the limelight. This is especially true for those who make buzzer beating winning baskets; they will surely remember that for the rest of their lives and maybe even equate the significance to career ascending moments, getting married, or maybe even the birth of their first child. If you’ve watched the tournament at any time in your life, you’ve surely witnessed the shots that these roundballers have played over and over again in pick up games, on the playground, and in practices, finally making fantasying game winning shots into reality. The mysticism surrounding these moments equates to last second home runs, Hail Mary catches, any other sports infused crazy moments. One moment that sticks in my mind is a game played by Ga. Tech in the early ‘90s. I have long since forgotten their opponent, but the cascade of events that precipitated the game winner is surely Hollywood worthy. With only seven tenths of a second on the clock, the Yellow Jackets inbounded the ball. Somehow, someway, the recipient of the in bound pass had the mental tenacity to bounce the ball, turn, and score the game winner. What a game! I can only hope that this tournament is filled with such awe inspiring moments.

Homeless people

I saw a homeless person yesterday that really caught my eye. He had a shopping cart overfilled to the point where he really struggled to control it. He was pushing it down the street and tried to push it into the parking lot where I was pulling out. I almost got out of my vehicle to offer to help him, but he then was able to get it onto the sidewalk. He was still struggling to push it straight when I turned on the road and drove off.
The whole scenario made me think about how our daily lives are compared to those who don't have a roof over their heads and who keep all their daily possesions in a small metal carrier. We also have a lot of baggage, but we can control it more comfortably because we have more resources, more money, and less difficulty controlling our destiny. It's truly sad when you see a person who is struggling with his or her's daily existance. There are probably a lot more homeless people in America then we know. With the current economic situation, this problem might only be more exacerbated. One reads about this situation and it's not hard to fathom that anybody reading this blog could end up in a similar situation with not that many tragic events. The housing crisis, the unemployment rate, and any other number of factors could cause somebody who had a comfortable, stable lifestyle to be further down the sidewalk pushing a cart.
I have never made a donation to the homeless cause but will do so in the future. My church just hosted a program to provide a warm environment for a few days for homeless people but I didn't participate. I now realize that I should have. I also work with people who told me that they were homeless in the past. The stories they shared are not pretty, and I'm thanfull that they are not living on the street anymore. I also hope that the Commonwealth of Virginia will provide more money to address this problem in the future. In the meantime, I urge you to help the homeless by donating money and keeping them in your prayers.

Accident

I finally got into a car accident. I was driving a large van at work and went into a McDonald's parking lot with a client. I was going to go through the drive thru but there were several cars in front of me. I didn't want to wait in line so I erroneously decided to back up a few feet and pull into a parking spot. The van is very big, I looked behind me and didn't see anybody. I started backing up and hear a honk and then the smacking noise of my car hitting the other guy. I pulled forward and parked. The other guy got out and he was pretty p.o.ed. I looked at the damage to his car. There was a small dent at the top of the hood, I didn't see any damage to the bumper, the plate was still intact, no damage to his headlights. I don't think I saw any damage to the bumper or back of the van. As per agency policy, I pulled out the paperwork to fill out and was supposed to call the police. The other guy said they wouldn't come out because the accident happened on private property. I should have called them anyway but found out later he was correct. The other guy wanted me to call the insurance company and I wasn't supposed to do that and he stayed irate. I then called financial services and got some guidance and the other guy talked to the person I would be sending the report to. I know I backed into the other guy, I didn't see him, he acted like I totalled his front hood. I got the information I needed and then went in and got some food to go for the client. When I came out, he was inside his car talking on the cell phone. I wonder if he was doing that when I backed up. I'll find out Monday about any repercussions. I know it could have been worse, it could have been a pedestrian. I don't like driving that van, it's so big. I made an error in judgement. Even worse, he called financial services several times after he left and said that his hood kept coming open while he was driving down the road. I don't know if that could happen, I hope he wasn't telling lies for whatever reason.
